HISTORY

A Piece of Einstein History in Your Hands
On December 17, 1944, more than 300 bombers of the British Royal Air Force, dropped 1,449 tons of bombs on the center of Ulm in 25 minutes. The official death toll was 707 lives, and 25,000 inhabitants were made homeless. Among the buildings destroyed was the house at Bahnhoffstrasse B 135 where Einstein was born on March 14, 1879.
In July 2016, DC Developments of Hamburg began a major construction project in the heart of Ulm, creating the new Sedelhöfe shopping and residential area opposite the main train station. During the excavation by Züblin Ground Engineering of Stuttgart, the foundations of Einstein’s home were found to be intact, and the company carefully removed them and gave them to the City of Ulm.
When the campaign to create Albert Einstein Discovery Center Ulm began, Jens Burkert, a member of the founding board, came up with a crowdfunding idea, and the Ulm city government agreed. The Einstein home foundation was given to the AEDC Ulm, which began cutting the bricks up into small pieces, artfully mounting them on a metal plaque that also has Einstein’s signature and a quote about his hometown. Those who donated 100 Euros to the AEDC Ulm received a plaque. So far 1,700 pieces of Einstein’s house have been sent out to donors, each individually numbered like a fine lithograph. There are plenty left, because the total number will be 1 million.
Are you a science professor, teacher, student or class? Or do you know someone in those categories? Would you like to help make the Albert Einstein Discovery Center Ulm a reality? For a donation of $100 or more, we’d like to send you a piece of Albert Einstein’s birth house to treasure and display.
Those who receive this unique remembrance can also register to become official Albert Einstein Discover Center Relatives so that their names will be shown in perpetuity at the AEDC Ulm campus. Their children, grandchildren and all their descendents will be able to see them in the Relativity Room whenever they visit to remind them of their family’s involvement with the founding of the institution.
Donate here now and let us thank you for your part in our success with a part of Einstein’s birth house.
